Before the 2014
Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG sedan takes its place at the top of the refreshed E-Class lineup, we’ve got our first nearly camouflage-free look at the popular four-door’s revised styling. The white Mercedes shown here appears to be the updated 2014 Mercedes E63 AMG model, which may lose its three-pointed star hood ornament, following in the already-refreshed Mercedes C63 AMG’s footsteps.
Speaking of the C-Class, that car’s headlights may have served as inspiration for the revised E-Class. In AMG form, the 2014 E-Class has dark headlight trim and, by the looks of this prototype, more interesting LED daytime running lights than we’ve seen before from Mercedes. A freshened grille and redone lower front fascia complete the changes up front.
Retouched taillights keep things fresh from behind, an important update when your sensible midsize luxury sedan can rocket from 0-60 mph in well under 4 seconds. When we
tested a 2012 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG — with a 550-hp twin-turbo 5.5-liter V-8 — it completed the sprint to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds. We expect that time to decrease with a minor bump from the current car’s 16/24 mpg city/highway EPA rating, though rumors of the AMG model adopting all-wheel drive suggest fuel economy ratings may not head upward.
The revised
2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class should still offer a gas-powered V-6 model, diesel V-6, V-8, and AMG model plus the low-volume hybrid V-6. Sales of the E-Class remain steady, with 44,796 units sold through the end of September, making it the second-most-popular Mercedes behind the less expensive C-Class.
