NASCAR Senior Director of Communications Kerry Tharp confirmed today that the sanctioning body will assess no further sanctions to Kurt Busch in the aftermath of Sunday’s race at Talladega Superspeedway.A single-sentence statement from Tharp ended a debate that began when Busch suffered a fuel pickup issue, was hit from behind and spun while leading in Lap 99 Sunday. He impacted the inside retaining wall, then climbed from his car under the ensuing caution, only to discover that the damage to his Phoenix Racing Chevrolet was less severe than expected. He climbed back behind the wheel, re-fired his car and pulled away, tossing an equipment bag belonging to a nearby safety worker from the roof of the machine.
NASCAR subsequently ordered Busch to stop his car, but he did not hear those instructions as a result of removing his helmet after the crash. The sanctioning body ultimately parked him for the remainder of the event.
