Lamborghinis — Love and Un-love in the UAE and UK

Lamborghinis aren’t uncommon in the UAE. Given the region’s affluence, you’ll see plenty in the parking areas of Dubai’s shopping malls. Aventadors… Spyders… they’re all there in their splendor.

British car enthusiasts would especially be in their element, when you consider that the Lamborghini Gallardo came out on top in a recent Auto Trader survey of dream cars.

Lamborghini

If ever you get behind the wheel of one, then it’ll come as no surprise. The supercar has a four-wheel drive system that places it in a class of its own, and handles solidly. Not only that, as far as supercars go, the Lamborghini Gallardo is fairly practical. It has a deep front boot and the car’s wide-opening normal doors prevent it from being a supercar for the vertically challenged only.

Now for the juicy part: how does it perform? Well, this luxurious little number hits a top speed of nearly 197 mph, and 0 to 62 mph in 3.9 seconds, the kind of acceleration that doesn’t leave you time to even think about thinking about boiling an egg. The brake horsepower is 520 bph.

Running costs, of course, are high. The car insurance is expensive, and if you put your foot down on the accelerator the number of miles to the gallon doesn’t enter double figures. If it’s any consolation, however, powerful cars will always win you admirers.

So Lamborghinis are the stuff most UK motorists’ dreams are made of in terms of luxury cars. But how does this compare to the UAE?

Would you sell a Lamborghini?

Five years ago, a survey asked visitors at the Middle East International Motor Show, in Dubai, ‘What is your dream car?’

Unlike the Brits, ‘BMW’ was the most popular response. Mercedes came second and Lamborghini came third. Naturally, Porsches and Ferraris found their way in there too, but these were the main three.

This summer, a lucky entrant in the UAE won a 2012 Lamborghini Gallardo in a raffle. Two days later, however, he sold it for Dh 550,000, was planning to buy a cheaper car and invest in a new business with the money, and probably had lots of car enthusiasts throwing their head into their hands in disbelief. …

Or even give one away?

Maybe the owner couldn’t afford to maintain the vehicle and selling it on was simply an act of love. Not all supercars are that lucky. Unprepared for the turbulent financial times, some UAE nationals and expats have splashed out on their dream car but then, unable to keep up with the payments, have just left their pride and joy to fend for itself in an airport car park or other area. The police tow it away, place it on auction, and the successful bidder takes the car to a more loving home at a lower price.

Lamborghinis — they’re popular in the UK, though a lot of people can only ever dream of them, and they also enjoy some popularity in the UAE, where they’re more than a dream for several people. Of course, with cars like these, not only do have to make the dream come true: you have to keep the dream alive, something which not everyone manages.
