NASCAR Finalizes 2013 Sprint Cup Rules

NASCAR has finalized its 2013 Sprint Cup Series rulebook, and distributed those specifications to the teams.

After more than 12 months of trial and testing, teams have been waiting anxiously – though not always patiently – for a finalized version of the rules. As of last week, Sprint Cup Series teams had still not received all the parts needed for their new 2013 bodies, but the new rules distributed yesterday will allow teams to make concrete preparations for an upcoming test at Charlotte Motor Speedway next Tuesday and Wednesday.

Next week’s test will mark the first time teams have worked with a finalized aerodynamic package, with the same front splitter and rear spoiler combination that will be used at Daytona International Speedway in February of next year. Multiple sources say, however, that NASCAR could still make some minor chassis and/or suspension changes in an effort to improve competition and increase the amount of side-by-side racing.

Teams will have ample opportunity to test the new package. NASCAR has announced a pair of tests in January at Daytona and Charlotte, and Goodyear Tire and Rubber will conduct a February test at Darlington Raceway. Once the season gets underway, there will be two additional tire tests at Daytona and Indianapolis.
