Rolls Royce Silver Spirit Overview

1. Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit, 1988

A new styling particularly eye-catching to the younger generation of owners popular from the 1960s, Rolls-Royce released new models in 1980. The cars’ designs satisfied the increasingly strict safety, emissions and consumption requirements internationally used. They were marked with the elegant coachwork from uncluttered lines and widely enlarged window areas. The new cars possessed a considerably enhanced ride and the new Girdling automatic height control in combination with gas shock absorbers. As expected the cars were luxuriously appointed with soft luxurious leather upholstering seats and thick carpets presenting the most comfortable feelings and a veneer covered in its traditional appearance. Moreover, long wheelbase versions limousines became available with extended passenger compartments.

In 1980 the two new cars- the Silver Spirit and Silver Spur were introduced. Externally looked, they were completely new, but maintained most of the chassis platform of the Silver Shadow. The exceptional detail was the rear end, which was designed to suffer new rear suspension.

Major changes and adjustments were made according to the safety requirements. The Spirit of Ecstasy, for example, was designed to retract into the radiator shell upon impact. Other improvements included better ride comfort and a new suspension system with automatic ride height control.

Silver Spur is another version. Four inches longer than the Spirit, it is easily identified by its extended rear windows. Special 25 Silver Spur Centenary models were produced in 1985, in the 100th anniversary of the motor car in Great Britain and the production of the 100,000th Rolls- Royce.

The Silver Spirit II and Silver Spur II turned up in 1990. Their appearance is similar to their predecessor; they were equipped with a revised face, with a new leather upholstering steering wheel, electronic gear selection display and a sophisticated automatic ride controls system.
